Landscape: SoundScape

"Camping Out"
"Warmth"
"Landscaped"

Project Description

Landscape: Soundscape uses the following elements to curate sonic experiences that merge natural / digital / intentional / unintentional sounds into the curated genre format of Landscape.

Landscape: Soundscape, developed from the following anchor points

  • Music is also a domestic commodity, and both emphemeral and disposable
  • Landscapes are most commonly visual representations of "natural" environments undisturbed by humans
  • Cityscapes are a subcategory of landscapes, incorporating the non exceptional, pedestrian, or mundane evidence of human activity
  • Soundscapes capture all of the intentional and unintentional sounds of all human and non human elements

With Xiaodi Alice Tang
Curated by Blair Simmons and Ariel Oakley

Prompted by the following call for landscapes priced at $99.99:

"We seek to engage with: value, labor, access, and the socialization of taste. With each work priced equally, what remains is the question of value. This flat affordable rate serves to question each artist how they determine the value of their labor. The installation itself is a visual representation of the variation in size and material that is “worth” $99.99 to each participating artist. In specifying visual themes that evoke popular genre painting styles the show points to art as a domestic commodity, but in its overwhelming multiplicity of styles and artists (installed salon style floor to ceiling) this is pushed to a place of absurdity and joyous, raucous overwhelm. The goal is: inclusivity of artists and community, engagement on how value is determined, and a fun atmosphere to engage in the joy of the rhythm of exchange.
